How Windows Are Created

Mar 17, 2023 | Latest

Have you ever wondered about the process of how windows are created, making glass that is completely smooth and clear? Many are unaware of the complex procedure to create the gorgeous windows that are frequently looked through in residential and commercial buildings. Glass is produced in a factory through a rigorous process that can reach temperatures of up to 1500 degrees Celsius!

First, the process of window creating glass:
First you need the ingredients, this includes sand, soda ash, dolomite, limestone and salt cake. These components are then mixed together, along with any additional recycled glass and heated in a furnace to 1500 degrees Celsius. The massive furnaces are equipped to manage more then 1200 tons of glass. As the glass melts into a liquid form, it is then brought to a temperature of 1200 degrees Celsius. The glass in it’s liquid form is then fed into a bath of molten tin where the glass floats onto the tin surface, creating a sheet. The temperature is reduced and the glass then hardens into a sheet, after being lifted onto rollers. The size and thickness of the glass depends on the flow and roller speed during the process. The glass is then cooled and reheated slowly to increase strength and to prevent shattering.

During this process, the glass may be glazed and coated with an insulated glaze, tints and other coatings. Tempered glass is also created during this process by being reheated and cooled with sudden blasts of cold air.

From the glass that has been created in the factory, how does it become the window in your home?

Next, the process of manufacturing a window:
To fit a certain window, dimensions are entered. Machines cut the glass to the required size and a high-pressure cleaner is used to clean the glass.
The glass panes are joined by a seal, the frame is then cut into the required dimensions and assembled together.

It’s apparent that creating a window for residential or commercial applications can be a thorough operation that calls for complex equipment and skilled specialists.
