The B.C. Energy Action Framework

Mar 24, 2023 | Latest

The B.C. Energy Action Framework was unveiled last week by the Premier of British Columbia, the Ministers of Environment and Climate Change Strategy, and Energy, Mines, and Low Carbon Innovation.

By making the declaration, British Columbia has formally decided to shift its economy away from additional LNG expansion and towards one based on clean energy and green products. It is one that makes use of the province’s capacity to produce a sizable amount of renewable electricity and guarantees that projects in the oil and gas sector are in line with B.C.’s climate goals.

One of the earliest sustainability techniques to use natural energy to heat and cool a house is the installation of double- or triple-pane windows. This offers homeowners the chance to accomplish energy efficiency with only one investment upgrade to their windows. Double- or triple-pane glass is used in all of the windows facing the cardinal directions to trap and block natural heat as necessary. Every window has two or three spaces between the glass panes that are filled with gas.

Energy efficient windows are an important consideration for both new construction and existing homes. Heat gain and heat loss through windows are responsible for 25%–30% of residential heating and cooling energy use.

  • B.C.’s Building Electrification Sector Needs
British Columbia has long been considered a leader in building efficiency and decarbonization policy through the development of the B.C. Energy Step Code and more recently with the Zero Carbon Step Code. B.C.’s building code has served as an example for other jurisdictions looking to improve building quality while lowering emissions. But we have found through a recent industry survey and targeted interviews that this leadership hasn’t fully extended to existing buildings.
