Two Canadian Glass Standards Up For Public Review

The two glass standards have been resurrected after a long period of neglect following removal of government funding for updating standards. They are being updated and published again after long campaigns by industry groups like the Insulating Glass Manufacturers Alliance (now FGIA) to convince regulators that Canada needs its own glass standards for certain products.

What is a Public Review?

A Public Review has been called to resurect the glass standards. Public Review is a key step in developing a standards document, because it gives everyone an opportunity to provide input to improve the document. In that way, future users of the document and everyone interested in the matter may be heard.

CAN/CGSB 12.1 Safety glazing
* Expanded classifications to include a section on vacuum insulating glass (VIG).
* Various editorial fixes related to the CGSB Style Manual.
* Sections on testing method description were replaced with references to the appropriate ASTM standard to better harmonize with ANSI Z97.1 Safety Glazing Materials Used in Buildings – Safety Performance Specifications and Methods of Test.
* Normative references were updated and bibliography was added.
* Annex B was added to consider the climate resiliency on glass when exposed to extreme conditions and related to climate change

* Addition of terms and definitions section
* Addition of insulating glass units with a VIG lite (hybrid units)
* Allowance for additional glass thicknesses
* Addition of Quads with glass lites

* Revised viewing methodology for Volatile Fog
* Revised Gas Concentration testing methodology
* Addition of Internal Components
* New annex on Climate Change
* New annex on Rapid Assessment Chamber (RAC)
* New annex on Internal Components
* Removed Annex on Optional Initial Seal Test
* Removed Annex on Failure Analysis for Gas-Filled (water immersion technique)

CAN/CGSB 12.1 Safety glazing and CAN/CGSB 12.8 Insulating glass units are available for public review. Drafts of the updated standards are available on request by emailing ncr.cgsb-ongc@tpsgc-pwgsc.gc.ca.
